ALFRED TERRY (1827-1890) educated at Yale University, New Haven, CT., he helped raised the 2nd Conn. Vols. at the outbreak of the Civil War. He then helped raise and became colonel of the 7th Conn. Vols., until he was promoted brigadier general in April 1862. During the siege of Petersburg, Virginia in 1864 Terry was first a division then corps commander. Terry led the second attack upon Fort Fisher, N. C., in January 1865. He remained in the army after the war and led the troopers who discovered Custer's massacred command at Little Big Horn in 1876. In 1877 he was sent to Canada to negotiate with Sitting Bull and by 1886 was appointed a major general in the regular army. Published by E. & H. T. Anthony, N. Y. C. from a Brady negative.
