A great pair of war-date Union soldier CDVs of Private John Newton Breed of the 5th and 32nd Mass. Volunteers who was wounded in action at Petersburg, Virginia on August 15, 1864. The first CDV shows Breed full standing with his hand on a chair credited to photographer A. R. Boynton, Sanbornton, N. H., with an inscription on the verso reading, in full: "This picture I thought I sent you in a letter long ago but found it in one of my envelopes. I forward[?] it you when I was there. John Newton Breed mother's half brother (H. Jane Holt.)" Housed in a CDV slip case that also bears an inscription on the verso reading, in full: "John Newton Breed. Mother's half brother (H. Jane Holt.)" The second CDV is a seated portrait of Breed holding a pistol across his chest that bears a Whipple, Boston photographer's imprint on the verso. This image is also housed in a period CDV slip case. Finally, the group includes two twentieth century copies of war-date CDVs of Breed. Overall VG. (4 pieces.)
