A war-date Union soldier’s ink inscribed 4pp. 8vo., letter written by Pvt. Francis H. Boggs, Co. E, 94th Ill. Vol. Springfield, Mo., Nov. 3, 1862 concerning the burial of fellow comrades, and of defending Springfield, Missouri against Confederate guerrillas, in part: “… Old man Elay has been…down for 2 or 3 weeks…the trouble is home sick[ness]…he has sayed…that he was going home…I was to a burying the other day. We buried 3 at once…they were…from the 8[th] Mo. Cavalry from the general hospital. There is quite a lot of prisoners here…and they are still coming in…we are…the only troops here to guard them…we were to be attacked…some of the boys got considerable scared…I laid down and went to sleep…they have taken several of our officers for the post…our company and company C went out on a scout…there was some of the enemies scouts seen…at dark…they were laying in…breast [works]. Some surrounded the [?] and drove it through…”. Little did Boggs’ realize that his military career was half over, since after enlisting just months earlier, he died at the very end of January 1863. Soiling, else very good.
