THOMAS G. STEVENSON (1836-1864) enlisted as a private in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was appointed colonel of the 24th Mass. Vols., leading the regiment at the battles of Roanoke Island and New Bern, North Carolina. He became a brigade commander during the Goldsboro Expedition in late 1862 and was promoted brigadier general on Christmas eve 1862. As a division commander during Grant's Overland Campaign in 1864, Stevenson was shot in the head and killed instantly during the battle of Spotsylvania, Virginia on May 10, 1864.
