A good war-date ink inscribed Union soldier’s 2pp. 4to., letter written by Corp. Frederick C. Floyd, Co. H, 40th New York. Vol. (Mozart Regiment) “U. S. General Hospital, Annapolis, Md., August 8, 1862”to his friend Pvt. Asa D, Smith 16th Mass. Vol. who was wounded at the battle of Glendale, Va., June 30, 1862 concerning the condition of his comrades at the hospital, in part: “…I remain in the office and am gradually regaining my health. Allen has gone to the [Manassas] Junction, with 50 others, and some 200 have…been sent to their regiments. A man in our old ward died very suddenly this afternoon. He took your bed after you vacated it [July 2, 1862]. He went after and obtained a drink of water lay down in the bed and in a few moments was a corpse. We are excepting another lot of sick and wounded everyday…last Sunday 28 were discharged among them the Corp. who slept by the side of you. Kent has had his arm taken off…is glad that he is soon to be out of the service. Phillips’ arm is getting better, but…it will always be stiff…he will get his discharge…”. A rather matter-a-fact letter describing the everyday life in a Civil War hospital. Floyd was discharged later that same year for disability. The original transmittal envelope is included. Very good.
