A good war-date Union soldier's prayer book presented by Private John D. Ayars Co. D, 10th New Jersey Vols. to his wife on Feb. 16, 1862 while he was stationed at Camp Clay, Washington, D. C. The book is boldly entitled: "The Soldier's Pocket Book.", 64pp. 12mo., published Presbyterian Board of Publication, Philadelphia, 1861. On the inside front cover his presentation reads, in part: "Mrs. Caroline J. Ayars Book. Presented by her Husband. Camp Clay, Washington. 10th Regt. N. J. V. Comp. D. Feb. 16, 1862. When this you see Remember me. John D. Ayars…". On the back inside cover Ayars used his army stencil to boldly stencil his name and regiment. There is little doubt that Ayars loved his wife and meant for her to "remember me" as in his 1861 diary (for sale elsewhere in this catalog) he made noted of his lieutenant giving up his tent for one night so Ayars could sleep with his wife! A great soldier's memento from a hard fought Grant Overland Campaign unit. VG to near fine.
