Document signed, Uniontown, PA., February 26, 1864, 7 7/8" x 12 1/4", old remnants on verso at corners, else fine. The document is addressed to former Congressman John Covode of Pennsylvania pertaining to the draft that President Lincoln called for on February 1, 1864. Lincoln had called for the draft of 500,000 troops, which was opposed by several men in Pennsylvania. The men had this document drafted asking Covode to use his power to help postpone the draft until more men could volunteer. The document reads in part: "Hon. Jno Covode, Sir: We are of opinion could the Draft be postponed, or the government bounties extended, for the period of 15 or 20 days that the call for 500,000 would be filled beyond any period or term (sic). Never since the rebellion commenced has there been such feeling among the people, men of all kinds are putting their shoulders to the wheel. We ask you (knowing your power to accomplish) to ask, yes influence those in power to give the people more time to volunteer and avoid the humiliation of a draft. Very respectfully yours....". The document is signed by 14 prominent Pennsylvania men, including Lt. Colonel Edward Campbell of the 85th PA Vol's. A fine document.
