War-date pencil inscribed Union soldier’s 3pp. 8vo. letter written by Pvt. John S. Sargent Battery L, 1st New York Light Artillery, Warrenton, Va., Nov. 9, 1862 concerning fighting and marching against the Confederate army since Antietam, in part: “…we crossed the river on the 30th and have been on the march…ever since...5 of our old men came back last night. They had been sick in the hospital and some had been taken prisoners. I hope the war will be over this winter but I do not think it will...we have been following up the Rebels ever since we left Maryland and our advance has been fighting with them. I suppose there will be a general engagement…before long…I hope we will come out all right...”. Also included is the original transmittal cover with 3-cent stamp, tied by Washington, D.C. Sargent served throughout the war with his regiment at the battles of Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. VG.
