STRONG, Caleb (1745-1819) was a Massachusetts lawyer and politician who served as the sixth and tenth Governor of Massachusetts between 1800 and 1807, and again from 1812 until 1816. He assisted in drafting the Massachusetts State Constitution in 1779 and served as a state senator and on the Massachusetts Governor's Council before being elected to the inaugural United States Senate. A leading member of the Massachusetts Federalist Party, his political success delayed the decline of the Federalists in Massachusetts. War of 1812 partially printed Document Signed “Caleb Strong” as Governor and Commander in Chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1pp. oblong folio, September 22, 1813, stating that Robert Tenney was elected “Captain of a Company in the fifth Regiment of Infantry.” With intact wax seal. Fold splits, else about very good condition...plus; War of 1812 partially printed Document Signed “Caleb Stong” as Governor and Commander in Chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1pp. oblong folio, July 24, 1815, stating that Samuel Duncan was elected “Major of the fifth Regiment of Infantry in the second brigade and second Division of the Militia...” State seal intact. Fold splits reinforced, very good condition. Both accompanied by engravings of Caleb Strong by Gilbert Stuart and J.B. Longacre. (4 items)
