From the front page, “Melancholy Occurrence,” reports the death of Stephen Deatur in a full column. In part, “They fought at 8 paces with pistols - at the first fire, both were wounded - Com Decatur in the abdomen, at which he died at half past ten ... Com. Decatur was taken to his house in Washington City, to the arms of his distracted wife ...” VG. Decatur was killed by Commodore James Barron in part as a result of comments Decatur had made over Barron's conduct in the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair of 1807. ... plus, Niles Weekly Register, May, 1820, 24pp., disbound. In a directly related newspaper report, a four page printing of Barron’s court marshal in 1808 whereby he was suspended for five years.
