WESTMORELAND, William Childs (1914-2005) was a United States Army four-star general. General Westmoreland was in command of all U.S. military operations in the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968, including during the 1968 Tet Offensive. Westmoreland adopted a strategy of attrition against the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army. He served as U.S. Army chief of staff from 1968 to 1972. Typed Letter Signed “W.C. Westmoreland” 1pp. quarto, on State of South Carolina letterhead, January 2, 1974, addressed to William W. Washburn, of Oregon, and reads in part: “...I appreciate your sentiments and pragmatic approach to resolving all conflicts. I know, however, that you share with me the belief that one of the fundemental tenants of our democratic system is the subordination of the military structure to the elected representatives of our nation. It appears to me that any violation of this precept would have a far greater debilitating impact upon our society than that created by what became an unpopular war. As you already perceive, the will to win in any moral conflict is strong indeed. The will to assure perpetuation of our governmental concept and an open society is far, far stronger...” with original transmital cover. Fine condition...plus; Photograph Signed “W.C. Westmoreland” 8”x10” color, dated December 1, 1886, and presented to Joe Fowles. Fine condition. (3 items)
