ZUMWALT, Jr. Elmo Russell "Bud" (1920-2000) was an American naval officer and the youngest man to serve as Chief of Naval Operations. As an admiral and later the 19th Chief of Naval Operations, Zumwalt played a major role in U.S. military history, especially during the Vietnam War. A decorated war veteran, Zumwalt reformed U.S. Navy personnel policies in an effort to improve enlisted life and ease racial tensions. After he retired from a 32-year Navy career, he launched an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate. Official Vietnam War teletype signed “Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr. Admiral US Navy Chief of Naval Operations.” 1pp. quarto, January 19, 1973, and reads in part: “...LAST NIGHT OUR COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF ANNOUNCED A CEASE FIRE OF THE LONGEST WAR IN THE HISTORY OF OUR NATION. I NEED NOT REMIND YOU HOW DEMANDING THAT WAR HAS BEEN...BUT THROUGH IT ALL, EVEN DURING THESE TURBULENT AND UNCERTAIN TIMES AS THE WAR HAS DRAWN TO A CLOSE, THE NAVY HAS MET ITS COMMITTMENTS....YOU HAVE DONE YOUR DUTY WELL AND AS WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE RETURN OF OUR COMRADES WHO HAVE SPENT SO MUCH TIME AS PRISONERS, YOU CAN STAND TALL IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT NO ONE STANDS TALLER THAN YOU...” Fine condition....plus; Teletype, 1pp. quarto, Janaury 9, 1973, and reads “The President has announced in Washington that a Vietnam Agreement has been initialed with formal signing and a cease-fire scheduled for Saturday....” Fine condition.
