November 20, 1862, Document Recruiting a "Correspondent" for the Military and Naval Agency, Philadelphia, PA, Choice Extremely Fine+. Printed Manuscript Document, 2-page integral sheet, 10" x 8." This form letter asks for a correspondent in the area to circulate the benefits and services offered to widows and orphans of war veterans. In part: "You are aware that the present rebellion has filled our country with the widows and orphans of those who have fallen on the Battle field, or who have been stricken down by wounds or disease contracted in the service. Many of those persons are ignorant of the benefits, to which they are entitled under the several Acts of Congress; and it only requires that the information should be borne to them through a proper, intelligent and responsible channel.... Arrears of pay and Bounty of One hundred dollars of deceased soldiers, are paid as follows... If you are disposed to act in conjunction with us, we will cheerfully afford you every information in our power..." Verso has a blue-inked notation: "Consent Bounty Agents Philad." Interesting details, describing in full the benefits available to widows of Civil War veterans, and under what circumstances. Extremely rare and the first document of this type we have seen.
