Broadside, “DEMOCRATIC MEETING.” with American eagle at center, 9-1/2”x8-1/4”, May 21, 1853, and reads “A MEETNG of the Democracy of Henderson co., is requested at D.R Burbank’s Tobacco Stemmery, on Saturday next, 28th Inst., at 2 o’clock, P.M., for the transaction of important business, which will be submitted to them by the CENTRAL COMMITTEE.” with ink manuscript at bottom reading “Henderson.” Fine condition....plus; Autograph Letter Signed by Kentucky Representative Ben Grey, 1pp. quarto, Henderson, Kentucky, May 24, 1853, with integral address to J.B. Bruner of Hardinburg, Kentucky, free franked by Ben Grey. It reads in part: “...You see from the enclosed that he Democrats are getting up the most thorough organization possible in order to carry this...elecion & to carry the next Legislature. ...If they defeat me with Dande what Whig in the District can next time defeat Dande or some other Democrat who may run? ...” Fine condition. GREY, Benjamin E. (1809-1875) Born at "Shiloh," near Bardstown, Kentucky, Grey pursued an academic course. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and began practice in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1838 to 1839, and a member of the Kentucky Senate from 1847 to 1851. He was presiding officer of the senate and Acting Lieutenant Governor in 1850. Grey was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses (March 4, 1851 – March 3, 1855). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Thirty-fourth Congress in 1854.
