1862, Illustrated Civil War Envelope by "New-York Union Envelope Depot," and Manuscript Letter, Choice Very Fine. The unused envelope features a printed blue illustration of a hand holding a "Jeff Davis' Passport": "Mr. Jeff. Davis and friends are permitted to leave the State of Virginia. Winfield Scott." Toned and stained envelope with mounting remnants on the back. Accompanied by a 4-page letter with a printed battle scene on the first page. Written by D.W. Miller, from Marion, Ohio, April 12, 1862, detailing thoughts on affairs of the day--not much "news" to share, but reflecting how the art of letter-writing kept people in touch during the war: "I would not take $100 for the pleasure I have had since I left home. I have a good employment, and intend to stay here for some time... I do not know what to write more as news is very scarce except war news which I suppose you know as much as I do. We have more Seceshs about here than there are at Lebanon."
