Document portfolio used by Schuyler Colfax as Vice President of the United States. Colfax served as a Congressman from Indiana, was Speaker of the House of Representatives, and served as Grant's first Vice President from 1869-1873. Measures 10" x 15", made of leather covered board. Opens to reveal a document pouch on the inside front and inside back covers. Inside are three 10" x 15" pieces of thick paper with numerous ink imprints, most probably used as a blotter by Colfax. On the front cover in bold gold lettering it reads "Schuyler Colfax Vice President of the United States". This portfolio descended through the Colfax family, to a north east collector, and then to our consignor. The piece has overall wear on the boards and spine, as expected from extensive use by Colfax. A difficult piece to place an estimate on due to being a truly unique piece, so we are going to be conservative. A great opportunity to acquire a fine piece of political Americana.
