Letter from the Secretary of War, In reply to the resolution of the House of Representatives of the 24th ultimo, relative to the plan proposed for the defence of the western frontier; also, what tribes of Indians inhabit the country immediately west of Arkansas and Missouri." April 1, 1840, 14pp. octavo, with complete list of each tribe and how many warriors represent each tribe. Includes the Apaches, Blackfeet, Sioux, Comanches, Crees, Seminoles, and more. Total number of warriors was estimated at over 60,000. With only 1,651 troops stationed on the western frontier, they were vastly outnumbered. VG. Historic.
