SCHOULER, William (1814-1872) He was four times elected to the Massachusetts house of representatives and once to the senate. In 1853 he was a member of the Massachusetts constitutional convention, and was chosen clerk of the house of representatives. In 1857 he was adjutant-general of Ohio, and from 1860 till 1866 held the same office in Massachusetts. He was the author of "History of Massachusetts in the Civil War" (2 vols., Boston, 1868-'71).Manuscript Letter Signed, “Wm. Schouler” 2p. quarto, on Adjutant General’s Office lettersheet, May 20, 1863, addressed to C.A. Albee, and reads in part: “...I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter...in regard to complaints made by our Irish fellow citizens of your town, that no person has been commissioned in the 9th Regiment from Marlborough, although many have gone from there to the regiment.In answer to your remarks I would say that the rule laid down by His Excellency, in making appointments, is plain, fair and sample, which is, when a vacancy occurs in a regiment, the Colonel of the same shall recommend a suitable person to fill it...if Colonel Guiney will nominate Michael Clark for 2d Lieutenant when a vacancy occurs in the 9th the Governor will commission him...” VG.
