PALMER, Innis Newton (1824-1900) Union Brigadier General who commanded cavalry at First Bull Run. Autograph Letter Signed, "I.N. Palmer" 2-1/4p. quarto, September 23, 1860, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, addressed to future Confederate General W.E. Jones,(1824-1864) Confederate general KIA at Piedmont, in part: "…I thought it best to sell the girl to some one who would be a kind master, and I preferred you to any one else. Lizzie has been living with my sister Mrs. Gardner in St. Louis for the last twenty months and she has had the entire charges of her youngest child. I had no idea but what they would be perfectly willing to let her go and I said nothing to her until after. I have just received a most appealing letter from my Sister in which she expresses herself perfectly desolated at the idea of losing Lizzie. Mrs. Gardner is a good deal of an invalid, and I now recognize what a trial it would be to give up Lizzie at this time….[I] ask you for humanity's sake to let the matter rest….No one but yourself shall have her…I would rather pay twice the value of the girl then to cause so much distress. When I go to Texas I shall try to go via St. Louis, and if I can arrange every thing satisfactory I will myself carry Lizzie and deliver her to Mr. Founsen…" Fine.
