A complete issue of the National Intelligencer, July 16, 1863, 4pp., never bound, VG. Seven columns of this issue are devoted to a number of reports of the New York riots. Here are several excerpts, “The mob collected in 32 street where a negro was hanged ... The rioters recommenced .. burning buildings between 28th and 29th streets. it is reported that several negroes were killed ... a mob enteredan alley near28th and 2nd avenue in which fifteen or twenty negro families reside. They burst open homes and found some unfortunates who were badly beaten. One beaten to a dying state. ... The colored people are fleeing the city in all directions. ... There wasquite a serious riot on SWtaten Island .. a band of ruffians number 500 roamed over the island hunting negroes. Several houses of the negroes were burned. Six negroes were killed. ... One of the most lamentable acts was the sacking and burning of buildings of 45th street known as the Colored Asylum... The anti negro excitement prevailed over all parts of the city. ... At about half past 7 o’clock a colored man was hanged to a tree in Clarkson Street .. afterwhich they set fire to his clothing, completely burning it from his body. ... they pursued the first (negro) to the corner of Varrick where he was beaten till dead and then hung to a tree.” the reports go on and on.
