A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Daniel W. Hall, Co. K, 50th Mass. Vols., "Camp Parapet, Carrolton, La., Feb. 4, 1863 regarding the war and of his desire of marrying a black women, in small part: "…we are ordered up the river…to Baton Rouge…the people say here that it is more health up the river then it is around New Orleans……it is very unhealthy here…the reason is the land [is] lower then the river…there is some good looking plantations…oranges are growing and they are better here then we get at home. If you want to see the African race you can see them here. There is ten to twenty contrabands come in to the camp everyday. I think some of taking a black girl to live with and staying out here. I like them so well they dress so well and have such pretty faces. Some of them get on hoop skirts and sweet shoes and I tell you they look gay…the white here are most all Secesh. The other day I was out on picket guarding a house and the women folks at the time…the Union troops took this place…helped to spike the guns and would have blown up the powder magazine if they had known how…Ben has been [in] a battle since I left home and one Georgetown boy was killed and Charles Merrill was wounded…".
