Frederick Douglass (born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, ca. February 1818 -February 20, 1895) was an African-American social reformer, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writing. He stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Many Northerners also found it hard to believe that such a great orator had been a slave. Exceedingly rare cabinet card of Douglass, Brownell, Providence, RI., 1881 back imprint. This seemingly unpublished image was presented by Douglass to Amarancy Paine (1812-1882), who was Secretary of the Providence Anti-Slavery Society. The ink inscription on the verso, not in Douglass's hand, reads "Fred Douglas presented to Amarancy Paine Sarle by Fred Douglas" (Sarle being her married name). The image has a date of 1881 on the verso, thus this image was given to Paine, by Douglass, one year before her death. Amarancy Paine was a pioneer in the New England abolitionist movement, working with the likes of William Lloyd Garrison, Sarah Gould, Phebe Tucker, Harriet Peck, and others. She had met Douglass during the movement when he would come to New England to give speeches. Paine was also very active in collecting funds for the Colored Orphan Shelter in Rhode Island. Fellow abolitionist Wendell Phillips was quoted saying after her death "As I recollect Amarancy Paine, she was herself an indefatigable worker, and had the faculty of getting out of everybody else she met the most they could do". The cabinet card has some light scattered age, else fine. This is a rare and important image.
