French Postcard shows President Theodore Roosevelt stutting, arm in arm, with a well dressed black man. The caption “Etats-Unis. Blanc et Noir” translates to In the United States, White and Black. Of course this is in reference to Roosevelt’s White House dinner invitation to Booker to Washington October 16, 1901. Although it is difficult to image today, but this invitation brought an unrelenting barage of criticism. Here’s an example from a South Carolina US Senator, ““The action of President Roosevelt in entertaining that n****r will necessitate our killing a thousand n****rs in the South before they will reach their place again.”
