When Private First Class Harry Roach of the U.S. Army Signal Corp wrote the two letters making up this lot, the so-called Philippine Insurrection was recently quelled and American forces were contending with Muslim Moro rebels in the southern Philippines. Roach's writing is fluid and quite descriptive of his exotic posting. He also reveals social attitudes that would be totally unacceptable today. Typed Letter Signed, "H. Roach", 6 pages, quarto, February 24. 1904, Atimonan, Philippines to Mrs. E.H. White, Binghampton, New York. The letter reads in very small part: "...I believe I am getting to be quite a nigger lover...You will see soldiers coming back from the Islands all cussing the Filippino, As a rule so do I, but in their case as well as all others there are exceptions...Some Americans forget themselves so far as to marry one of these people. That is as bad in my estimation as for a white man in the states to marry a nigger, for a comparison now the American nigger and the Filippino are about equal..."...Plus; Autograph Letter Signed, "Harry J. Roach", 12 pages, quarto, June 6, 1904, Pagbilas, Philippines to Mrs. E.H. White, Binghampton, New York. The letter reads in very small part: "...I hardly think any of you will see me again in New York State...I will go to Panama for the remainder of my life. Lots of money to be made there but a short life to live, as you probably know it is very unhealthy there...". Both letters are with covers and in Very Fine condition.
