Autograph Letter Signed, “B.R. Curtis”, 4p. octavo, January 8, 1863, National Hotel, addressed to E.W. Stoughton, and reads in part: “...Mr. Causten Browne writes me that I am expected to argue the motions for injunction in the pistol case before Judge Shipman, & that it is set down for the 30th Jan....Washington now is anything but pleasant. It is too near the causes & the men from whom the sins of the country have come. And, in my deliberate judgement, the country is ruined, for my time. Things may be made worse; the destructive effects of folly & passion may be more extensive than is now necessary; but at the best, our country is destroyed & not in my day can it be reconstructed....” Fine.
