IRELAND, John (1827-1896) was elected the mayor of Seguin in 1858.[1] A firm believer in states' rights, Ireland was an ardent secessionist and served as a delegate to the 1861 Secession Convention. He joined the Confederate States Army as a private and was eventually promoted to colonel., then later, was the 18th Governor of Texas from 1883 to 1887. Autograph Letter Signed, 1p. 8vo., Seguin,( TX)., Jan 3, 1858 concerning the hire of boy "Bill", the property of John Ireland, to John Henderson for the term of one year, for the princely sum of $200 and agrees not to remove “said negro from Guadelupe County, to furnish said boy with ample clothing...’. Interestingly, Ireland was a member of the delegation to the Secession Convention, a Confederate lieutenant colonel, and a post-war governor of Texas. Stain in upper left corner, else very good.
