BEE, Barnard Elliot, Jr. (1824-1861) was killed at First Manassas during the first few months of the Civil War and, as such, never had a chance to show his true military mettle. He did, however, achieve immortality as the man who first likened Thomas Jonathan Jackson to a "stone wall". Weakened folds separating slightly at the edges, but not affecting the text. Toned lightly around the margins. Autograph Document Signed, "Bee." Two integral pages, 8" x 9-3/4", n. p., n. d. [circa 1858]. Written for his friend and West Point classmate, Captain James N. Ward, he says, in part: "Capt James N. Ward of the Third Regiment of Infantry, whose death...was recently announced, was a native of Georgia...He was graduated at West Point in 1845 and attached to the Sixth Regiment of Infantry. The battle of Monterey [Mexican War] caused many vacancies...one of which was filled by Lieut Ward who joined it at Vera Cruz...a severe wound received at the storming of Cerro Gado prevented his participating in the remaining battles of the War...In social life Capt Ward with his warm heart and generous impulses made many friends...Among these the writer is proud to enumerate himself. Warm hearted generous and amiable, high toned and honorable, he has gone to his early grave! The Army will honor his memory the friends who have loved him long and well will deplore his loss, while the...wife and mourning mother must find their only Earthly consolation, in the hope of meeting him in Heaven."
