A great early Civil War Confederate officer wife's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Ellen Moore, [n. p., n. d., but Berryville, Va., late April 1861], to her husband, 1st Lt. Samuel J. C. Moore a newly-minted Confederate officer in Co. I (Clarke Riflemen), 2nd Virginia (Stonewall Brigade), in part: "A letter has come for you in which there is…a gold dollar…if the girls from Mr. Smith see you or some member of your company I will get them to hand it to you…Mr. Trayhern [possible future Capt. James F. Trayhern 35th Virginia (White's Battalion) Cavalry] is still here, says he wants to get a lieutenancy in the Provisional army or will join some of the companies at the Ferry [Harpers Ferry]. The flag is beautiful, hoping it will be done tomorrow…I will also send Sally to ask about the [?] coat tomorrow. Mrs. Marshall is going down to stay until Tuesday. Had you not better ask the favor of her to bring back your carpet bag of clothes for the wash…the boys say Floyd is here trying to get up or rather raise the Clarke Guards. Meat houses are being broken open almost every night…". VG to near fine
