A great early war-date Confederate merchant's letter, 1p. 4to., written by "H. L. Guiver, Memphis, [Tenn.], April 10, 1861 addressed to President James Polk's friend, John H. Bills (1800-1871) a prominent Tennessee merchant, plantation owner and Freemason, in part: "…my note due you for $300.29 was paid…my other note due six months hence with interest…amounts to the same. Can I not give you a note for both amounts at 12 months…with 1 1/4 per cent int-…last year I bought several lots in an d near the city and…I can make no sales until we can get Tennessee out of this 'Mock Republican' Government (which I think we will certainly do before long) I find it necessary to financier a little in order to meet my payments…". Also included is a 4pp. long folio, Neilson & Durrett merchant's purchase receipt, Bolivar, Tenn., for items bought by President James Polk's friend, John H. Bills (1800-1871) a prominent Tennessee merchant, plantation owner and Freemason in 1862.
