War-date Autograph Letter Signed "Stand Watie / Com Cher Regt," one page, octavo, "Head Quarters Cher Regt / Camp 'Scales'," December 27, 1862, reading: "To all whom it may concern! Know ye; That I this day appoint and allow to John M. Thompson a citizen of the Cherokee Nation the privileges and emoluments of Sutler of this Regiment. As such he will have permission to go into Arks., Texas, or any other Southern Confederate State or Territory for the purchase of his supplies." Stand Watie, the Confederacy's only Cherokee brigadier, was the last Confederate general to surrender. He gave up his sword on June 23, 1865, well over two months after Appomattox! The "Camp 'Scales' " in the letter likely refers to a location under the command of Joseph Absalom Scales, noted Cherokee attorney and one of Watie's subordinate officers. The letter has some spotting, but is intact with bold, legible writing and a bold signature. Very good condition.
