A rare war-date Maryland Confederate artillery non commissioned officer's letter, 2p. 4to., written by 1st Sgt Thomas LeCompte [promoted 1st Lieut., WIA Gettysburg], 4th Maryland (Chesapeake) Light Artillery, "Camp of the Chesapeake Artillery near Martinsburg, [Va.], Oct. 16, 1862" to his mother mostly concerning his battery's besting a Union battery at the battle of Second Manassas campaign (an event that Stonewall Jackson himself in known to have witnessed). LeCompte's letter reads, in part: "It's being such difficult matter to get a letter to you has prevented my writing for 6 months…but Frank Stewart who has lately joined our company informs me that I am reckoned among the…dead…I am still in the land of the living…not withstanding the iron hail has fallen around me for the last three…months (at Richmond, Cedar Mountain, Manassas and Sharpsburg, Md.). I have escaped almost unhurt, with the exception of a slight scratch on the head by a piece of spent shell which however did not prevent my helping to make the Yankees position too hot for them to hold. Two of our pieces on that occasion were engaged with 6 of theirs, but when on account of darkness, we were compelled to cease firing only one of of their pieces was able to reply, we having disabled the other five with a loss…of 3 horses [and] a number of our men being hurt bad enough to leave their posts…the Cambridge boys are all well. Kenny White has entirely recovered from his wounds and is…in the Provost Marshals office at Richmond under Major Griswold…". Near fine.
