A great pair of war-date Confederate soldier's letters. The first is, 1p. 4to., written by 2nd Lt. John Grason [KIA Fredericksburg], 4th Maryland (Chesapeake) Light Artillery, [Martinsburg, Va.], Oct. 16, 1862, in part: "…J. and I are both well and…we have escaped the dangers of the terrible battles recently…the reason they do not write…is because it is forbidden by the Federal government. We have heard indirectly from home…all our friends here are well. [Corp. Thomas] Mummey, [Pvt. j.} H. Wilson [WIA Gettysburg], [Quartermaster Sgt. G. McCubbin…[Pvt. Robert C.] Jones [lost arm in accident]…". Also included is the original transmittal cover addressed to his Baltimore County, Maryland family. ... plus, The second letter is 1p. 8vo., written by Pvt. Lewis Warrington, 4th Maryland (Chesapeake) Light Artillery, [Marinsburg, Va.], Oct. 16, 1862 to his parents, in part: "…I hear that an opportunity may appear to forward a letter…I add these lines to give you the latest news from us. We both are well and trust all the family are so. We are expecting to be on the move every day but can not say whether it will be in the direction of Richmond or whether in that of Maryland…". Both VG. (2 letters, one cover.)
