A war-date Confederate manuscript military document, 1p. legal size folio, issued by command of General Polk as corps commmander in the Army of Tennessee, Shelbyville, Tenn., Mar. 9, 1863 being General Orders No. 12, reading, in small part: "The Lieut. Genl. Comdg has been deeply mortified at having heard several sources of the disgraceful conduct of certain unprincipled men wearing the uniform and enrolled among the soldiers of this brave and gallant army…these men under the cover of night-at an hour when most of the men are asleep-leave frequently…their camp and gone prowling about the countryside arousing quiet men & women from their beds while they are engaged in thieving expeditions against their smoke houses, poultry yards, bee hives and gardens…it has no place in an army such as ours. It has no place among high toned and honorable men who have volunteered to assist their freedom…the Lieut Genl comdg therefore hopes…that the petty thieves…be brought to a speedy & certain punishment…ordered that [the] Brigade Guards shall be established around every brigade of this corps…and that no officer or private shall be permitted to leave…at any time except by the written permission of the brigade commander…".
