A great former Mississippi state militia man's war-date letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Micajah Sanders, Standing Pine, Miss., April 6, 1863 to his cousin Dr. G. M. Gamble (possibly in Texas), in part: "…I am yet in the land and among the living…I have been troubled a good deal in regard to this troublesome war. I have been in the state service since last July until the 15th of March…I lost my oldest son. He died last June…6 or 7 weeks after going to camp and many of my neighbors and connections have fallen by sickness and in battle…it seems that if this war lasts much longer…our country will be ruined…speculators and extortioners will have control of the country and of the Government too I fear…cows are selling at from 50 to 75 dollars, factory thread 10 to 12 dollars per bunch and cotton cards is only 25 dollars per pair…are you in the army…the Yankees are not making much by their operations on the Yazoo and Miss. rivers…I want to hear from you…what arrangements have you made with the notes I left with you. We are not trying to collect dues in this country on good men preferring their notes to the present currency…". VG
