A good war-date Confederate Government congratulatory announcement document, 1p. legal size folio, issued by command of General Joseph Johnston, being General Order No.4, "Hd. Qrs., Chattanooga, [Tenn.], January 28, 1863," reading, in part: "General Johnston has greater satisfaction in expressing to this command his sense of the high and admirable conduct of the Army of Tennessee in the recent operations near Murfreesboro…that patriotic army contending with great superior numbers, by its own courage and the skill of its General, inflicted upon the enemy a loss almost equal to its own number…capturing 33 cannon, and a thousand wagons…to it the thanks of the Government and gratitude of the Country…". Scribed, signed and made official by Major John Ingram as AAG on the staff of Brig. Gen. Benjamin Cheatham for Brig. Gen. Preston Smith brigade. Negligible dampstains, period binding hinge effects the verso, with expected wear, else VG.
