Confederate imprint “ANDREW’S MOUNTED ARTILLERY DRILL; COMPILED ACCORDING TO THE LATEST REGULATIONS FROM STANDARD MILITARY AUTHORITY, BY R. SNOWDEN ANDREWS, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL COMMANDING BATTALION ARTILLERY.” Charleston, Evans & Cogswell, 1863, 164pp. with illustrations and music, 120cm x 185cm. Inscribed in pencil “Col. Carle A. Woodruff U.S. Army from Howard Hawywood of Raleigh, N.C.” Hawyood was a Confederate colonel and surgeon. A hospital in Raleigh was named after him. Also inscribed in ink “At the date of this preface there were 8 Batteries of Horse Artillery in the Army of the Potomac, 7 being Regular batteries and 1 Volunteers. After the battle of Gettysburg 4 more regular batteries were made Horse Artillery. Carle A. Woodruff Bvt. Lieut Col. U.S.A.” Fine condition.WOODRUFF, Carle Augustus (1841-1913), was a career soldier in the United States Army who rose to the rank of brigadier general. He received the Medal of Honor while serving as an artillery officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
