A great war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. oblong 8vo., written by Pvt. William W. "Billy" Morell [KIA Kearneysville, Va., 7/16/63], Co. D, 1st Virginia Cavalry, "Camp 1st Va. Cavly., Culpeper, Va., June 6th, [1863], in part: "…the girls have all dropped off [all] of a sudden…we have a pretty large force of cavalry here…Genl. Jones' Brigade came down this week. Genl. J. E. B. [Stuart] had another divisional review yesterday. Fitz & W. H. Lee's, Robinson's, Hampton's & Jones Brigades was present and more ladies was out than I thought Eastern Virginia could furnish. Genl. Hood's Division is here at C. House and was out at the review. The old infantry cut at us a good deal. One of them said he would give $1000.00 to see a dead man with spurs on-on a battle field. You ought to have heard our boys who have once been in infantry cutting back at them. A move of some kind will be made pretty soon…yesterday an interior picket was posted in rear of our lines to prevent anyone-either soldier or citizen from passing out to or from our lines without a pass from Genl. Stuart. Bob Jones was down in Loudon Co. He captured a…horse…the pickets would not let him through so he had to flank them by going round ton Sperrysville…I presume that all is going…well at Vicksburg. We cannot get any news here from either Vicksburg or the election…". This letter is quoted in R. J. Driver's regimental history of the 1st Virginia Cavalry.
