Circular, one page, 5" x 5 ¾"General Orders, No. 27, "Headquarters Cavalry Division A. N. Va., August 6, 1863," reading, in part: "The gallant and spirited resistance offered by Hampton's Brigade to a body of the enemy's Cavalry greatly superior in numbers, on the 1st inst., deserves the highest commendation…In this contest the Horse Artillery, as usual, performed a part equal in heroism to its already brilliant prestige…" The verso is inscribed "L P Guerry," who no doubt is Private LeGrand P. Guerry, "Hart's Co.," South Carolina Washington Light Artillery. Guerry's battery opened the first salvo against Buford's cavalry before dawn on August 1st. Parrish & Willingham 1241. Smoothed creases, very good.
