Another rare war-date Texas home front letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain Miss. "M. L. D.", Prairie View, [Texas], Mar. 11, 1863 to her brother, in part: "…I have no news…as we have not had much mail since the lines was cut at Vixsburg…we have had another great battle there…says we killed 40,000 Yankees and lost 6,000 of our men…we have a ride every Sunday evening…we get on them and run them six or 8 miles…we can run the mustang and Spanish ponies on a man's saddle as there is so many of us. Some of us must ride men's saddles…Fayette is riding the mail…sister Mat…ways 128 & I weigh 140. I am stouter than I ever was in my life. It is a great blessing for us all to fel like working…there is so much of it needed. If we could get [cotton] cards I think we could do very well towards getting clothes. I hope we will get some from Mexico. Several train of wagons have gone over there now after goods and medicines. Tom Jordan [formerly Co. G, 7th Texas Vols. see the Elliott Ross letter in this catalog] married in Dec. to a Miss. Wilder from Ala…Tom can not use his arm any yet nor ever will. [He was discharged for wounds received at Fort Donelson, Tenn., Feb. 15, 1862.] He is tending to his father's business now…my sweetheart came home from the army last sunday on a sick furlough…I have not seen him yet but think he will come soon. He is as tall as ever men [can] get to be. I have another one. He does not belong to [the] army. He is not old enough yet. I hope the war will end before he has to go off…how sweet it sounds the name of peace…we have no school now as all of our teachers have gone to the army. I taught 3 months last year…Willie is large enough to go to war. He is so large [for] his age…we have Confederate money plenty and nothing hardly to buy…". VG
