A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Thomas McCann, Co. A, 1st Pennsylvania Reserve Corps (30th Penn. Vols.), "Camp near Retchmend, [Va.], June 15, 1862," concerning an attack by Fitz Hugh Lee's cavalry upon the Union supply base near Tunstell's Station while McClellan advanced upon Richmond, in part: "…we left Fredericksburg the 10 of June and got to White House the 12[th]…running down the Rappahannock we past Yorktown…we left the York river and we went up the Monkey [Pamunky] river to [where] we cum to the White House. We laid over night when we was ordered to pack up and start…we was ordered to go down the railroad…we marched twelve miles it was very warm. Our company was on the rite…it was hard times. We marched too miles when we got orders to march to camp…we are ten miles of Richmond. We can hear coax raden [clocks ringing] all the time. There was three regiments of cavalry attack[ed] our train of wagons. [They] killed the horses. There was ten men out of our company…our fellows is following them up. I hope they will kill the damned rascals. Our pick[ets] brought in three of them. They had our guns. They was rifled musket[s]. They was dressed in our uniforms…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. McCann's phonetic spelling has been corrected.
