A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James B. Sterling, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., [MWIA Olustee, Florida, 2/20/64], Pulaski, Geo., May 18, 1862, in part: "…I am gaining very fast. When I was first taken…two thirds of the time…I did not know anything at all. The colonel came around [to] muster us in before paying off the reg…I was carried to the hospital [and] I knew nothing at all for some time. The other day there was a sergeant from Co. C and one from our Co. with some eight men went up to Savannah City with a flag of truce but did not have any national flag and the seces took them prisoners. They went up to see some thing about exchanging prisoners. The seces kept them two of 3 days and let them go…they were glad to get away…". VG
