Good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. George McKinley, [DOD Camp Nelson, Ky., 1/14/64, buried Camp Nelson National Cemetery], Co. K, 100th Penn. (Roundheads) Vols., "Camp Kalorama'" [Washington, D. C.], Sept. 25, 1861, in part: "…we are encamped about one mile from the city on what is called the Kalorama heights…we can see all over the city…and view the encampments of more than one hundred thousand men. There has been three thousand men went past our camp this week on their way to Virginia…there was one man died since we came here. There was one young man that got home sick and wanted the colonel [Daniel Leasure, promoted bvt. brig. gen.] to let him go home but he would not…so he went down into the woods and cut off two of his fingers…we practice a shooting every day. We shoot ten rounds a day…care of J. L. VanGorder [MWIA Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62], Leasure's Regiment…". VG
