A good war-date Union soldiers letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Sgt. Ephraim Bender (WIA Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62, wounded in left foot), Co. K, 100th Penn. (Roundheads) Vols., Beaufort, S. C., Dec. 11, 1861, in part: "…we have moved up the river fifteen miles on another island…we have got orders to march on tomorrow…for Otter Island that is…next to Charleston. The town of Beaufort is pretty near as large as Newcastle. The houses were left with the furniture in them nearly every house had piano in it & the best of furniture in it. We went across the island yesterday to the ferry…they have destroyed the ferry. The river is not very wide there. We could see them on the other side. There is plenty of negros & dogs on the island. The nigers are busy baking corn bread for us and cooking chickens and bringing them into us…the Rebels are in a bad condition here. We found several letters that stated so…the negroes are very purly clothed and the general appearance of things look so…if we succeed in getting Charleston…they are gone up. If not it may sometime yet. It is only ten miles from this island to the railroad. If we…get hold of it and tear it up…[we] will stop there reinforcement…the nigers say all the white people is in the army old & young, little boys and all…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
