Autograph Letter Signed, “Alonzo Freeman”, 11th New York Cavalry, POW at Doyal’s Plantation, Louisiana, 3p. octavo, Hospital Scotts 900 Cavalry, December 16, 1863, with cover addressed to his cousin in New York City. The letter reads in part: “...A number of this regiment have re-enlisted for three years. The large bounties offered have induced several to re-enlist. I see that Senator Wilson has presented a memorial in the Senate desiring the pay of Hospital Stewards to be increased...I believe that it is the intention of the Colonel to erect a Church in camp for our spiritual benefit, it will be beneficial...The Southern people are very much disastisfied with Jeff Davis - did you read what one of the rebel congressmen says about him? I see Fernando Wood is brining forward some of his peace propositions in Congress & hardly think they will take....There is considerable talk of sending this regiment to Texas this spring...” Fine.
