A good war-date Union soldiers letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "The Union and the Constitution" patriotic stationery, by Sgt. Ephraim Bender (WIA Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62, wounded in left foot), Co. K, 100th Penn. (Roundheads) Vols., "Camp Kalorama'" [Washington, D. C.], Oct. 1, 1861, in part: "…I was down to the city…went through the Patent office. Thare was a grate site thare. It would take a person about a week to see everything…I saw the suit that Washington wore…I went from there up to the capitol, went through it then Old Abe would have me…up and have super with him, of course, I didn't refuse. Had a very pleasant time. Thare is pretty brisk time across the Potomac now. They have had several little fights yesterday and today our side is all right…I am fourth sergeant of our company. I don't have to stand guard and that is worth considerable. It is pretty hard for them that have to stand guard in bad weather…direct…in care of J. L. VanGorder [MWIA Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62], Washington City, Leasure's Regiment…". Unsigned. The original transmittal cover is included.
