A good war-date Union soldiers letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. George Bender (WIA Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62), Battery B, (Cooper's Battery), 1st Penn. Light Artillery, Great Falls, [Md.], Oct. 3, 1861, in part: "…yesterday morning the rebels fired on us but did not kill any of us. We fired on them but we didn't know whether we killed any…the cannon balls was flying putty thick around our heads and cutting off the little trees…it looked scary…there is three or four houses down at the foot of the hill and it would make you laugh to see folks run up the hill…there was four or five balls went through the house. The women and children came running up where I was and I told them to stay here [and] that there was no danger. They did so and after the battle was over they went to there home again but things looked putty scary about the house. The balls had scattered putty bad. We cant tell when they will commence again for they are over the river in the woods…we are in a poor place to fight…the cannon balls go across there pretty quick and cut off pretty big tree. They don't stop for trifles…". Also included is the original stamped patriotic cover. Overall VG
