This original, exceedingly rare Printed Broadside was issued for the recruiting of a Civil War German heritage regiment for the State of Illinois. It is printed completely in German Text with a "Fractur" style font, in deep black ink on heavy period paper and dated August 14, 1861. It measures approximately 6.5" x 10.5" being in very nice overall condition, with expected minor age and some light soiling on the blank back. The heading reads, "Unattached German Regiment for Illinois." This regiment is to be organized at Camp Butler near Springfield, which we believe later became the 43rd Illinois Infantry Regiment. The German text name at the bottom of the page is Julius Raith, who was Colonel of the 43rd Regiment. Also the 43rd was mustered in at Camp Butler in October of 1861. A very unusual German Text Broadside document and certainly worthy of more research. Fine condition. Organized at Camp Butler, Ill., and mustered in October 12, 1861. Moved to Benton Barracks, Mo., October 13, thence to Tipton and Otterville, November 3-4. Attached to Dept. of Missouri to February, 1862. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, District of Cairo, February, 1862. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, District of West Tennessee and Army of the Tennessee, to July, 1862. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, District of Jackson to September, 1862. Unattached District of Jackson to November, 1862. Post of Bolivar, District of Jackson, 13th Army Corps (Old), Dept. of the Tennessee, to December, 1862.
