A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Eli J. Ague [DOD 1864], Co. B, 39th Penn. Vols. [10th PRVC], "Army of the Potomac, McCall's Division, Third Brigade, Camp Pierpont, Va., Nov. 18-19, 1861," in part: "…I am still in the land of Dixie…we have been waiting for the movement of the fleet that sails to South Carolina…there is nothing going on but skirmishing…& keeping the rebels back from Washington. If the rebels fall back from Manassas to strengthen Charleston we will follow them & give them hell in the rear by land while the fleet gives it to them from the bay…seven of our men have been wounded the last ten days. Two was shot & five was wounded with pieces of shell…last Saturday thirty men of one of the New York regiments was out husking corn about two miles from Falls Church. They had stacked their arms & got…across the field when a company of rebel cavalry rode up between them & their arms & took them all prisoners…the whole regiment started in pursuit but did not find them…Nov. 19th…two regiments…started after the rebels…they went in the right direction to get work to do…we have orders…to march…there is thirty thousand of the Potomac army going together. We will march in the direction of Fairfax Court House. We expect to have some fighting…some of us will not return & so I thought I would finish this tonight for fear It might be my turn next …". VG
