A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on McClellan patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Eli J. Ague [DOD 1864], Co. B, 39th Penn. Vols. [10th PRVC], "Camp Pierpont, Va., Jan. 25, 1862," in part: "…the mud here is knee deep…we are…guarding the camp & picket lines…we have only one death in the hospital in the last four months…the weather is very hard on the rebel troops…as they are mostly from South Carolina, Alabama & Georgia…we was intending to march to Manassas & attack them on three different sides but the rebels got to hear it & they thought it would be healthier to move out…we will very likely attack them at Bull Run, Centreville or if they eave we will likely follow then…we have pretty good prospects of getting done next summer…when the war is over the Penn. Reserve Volunteer Corps will be sent home but not discharged. They [will] stay at home…will draw their pay…& be ready whenever called upon if they should be needed again during the three years…we have no battle of any consequence here in Eastern Virginia since the battle of Dranesville. I will send you a list of the men that were engaged in the battle belonging to Co. B…you may know some of them…". Included on the last page of Ague's letter is his list of thirty-four men that were engaged in battle at Dranesville. Negligible mouse chew at the top, else VG
