A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Eli J. Ague [DOD 1864], Co. B, 39th Penn. Vols. [10th PRVC], "Camp near Sharpsburg, Maryland, Oct. 7, 1862," in part: "…we would only stay awhile longer in camp, but…we will have to march again before long & if we get in a running fight again…we will not stop till the job is finished. The work must soon be done or the roads will break up & the artillery cannot move. We expect every day to cross the river into Virginia…we are in the first Corps & the first division…that places us at the head of McClellan's army so we will likely to commence marching first & we will certainly have the first fighting to do…but at the rate we have been losing the Reserve Corps will not hold out longer than next spring; one year ago we numbered thirteen thousand & now we are a little over four thousand & what…is left of us are worn out…the loss of our division the last days fight was ten hundred & ninety nine…there will be none left to tell what become of us…if the new troops are put into it after this, it will make it lighter on the old ones…I am now a little over one year in the service & about ten years older…".
